Choose to Lead

We don’t always get the leadership we want. At work. In life. In a pipe band. Sometimes direction isn’t clear. Decisions stall. Expectations feel fuzzy. You’re left wondering what the plan is—or if there even is one. It’s not always toxic. It’s not always wrong. It’s just not strong.
Still not an excuse.

Blaming leadership doesn’t move anything forward. Waiting for clarity doesn’t create it. Pointing fingers doesn’t solve a single problem.
Progress starts when someone decides to take ownership.
And it only takes one.
You don’t need a title at work. You don’t need rank in the band. You don’t need permission in life.
You need responsibility.
Step in without stepping out of line. Support the people in place. Don’t undermine—reinforce. When things go well, push credit upward. Not for recognition—for alignment.
When there’s a gap, fill it.
At work—bring solutions, not problems. Make your manager’s job easier, not harder.
In life—handle what’s in front of you. Close the loop. Do the hard things without being asked.
In the band—show up ready. Know your music. Help tighten the circle. Raise the standard without saying a word.
Don’t wait for direction—bring clarity.
Don’t complain about what’s missing—be part of what’s needed.
Don’t look around for someone else to lead—look in the mirror.
You don’t choose who leads you.
But you always choose how you show up.
And when enough people choose ownership—
work gets better
life gets steadier
and the band sounds like it should.
