In a band as diverse and passionate as Wake and District, the question of “How do we continue to get better?” goes beyond simply learning new tunes or adding more competitions to our calendar. For us, growth is about embracing the challenges that arise, supporting each other, and finding purpose in both the music we create and the mission we uphold. This mindset has been especially important as we head into a new season in 2025, with new leadership and fresh energy.
Building on Solid Foundations
Our journey to improve is built on a strong foundation, formed by the leadership, hard work, and resilience of our members. This past year, we navigated personnel changes and saw members step up in remarkable ways. When Kelsey Barry took the lead for our Grade 3 band, she set a new tone for the group, reminding us of the importance of teamwork and shared vision. It’s this type of leadership—where members not only meet challenges but grow from them—that is key to moving forward together.
Embracing New Leadership and Fresh Direction
In 2025, our Grade 3 and Grade 4 bands will be guided by leaders who bring both experience and innovation. Pipe Major Ken McKeveny and Lead Tip Neil Seivwright will lead Grade 3, while Pipe Major Paul Landers and Lead Tip Fisher Reese will guide Grade 4. These changes aren’t just structural; they’re intentional. Each leader brings a commitment to excellence, offering a clear direction for both bands to not only stay competitive but to refine their sound, approach, and camaraderie.
Staying Mission-Focused
Beyond the competitions and performances, our commitment to honor the fallen remains central to our band’s mission. Adrian Melvin, now leading our musical direction, keeps us grounded in the values that make our band unique. We’re not just playing for ourselves or for titles. Every time we perform, we are reminded of the deeper purpose that connects us to our community. This mission keeps us focused, no matter how many medals we win or how high we place.
Supporting Each Other and Growing Together
Getting better as a band also means getting better as individuals, and that requires support. We know that improvement doesn’t just come from practice alone but from the relationships we build and the willingness to push through challenges together. We’re grateful for the community of friends and family who show up to support us and for the members who encourage one another to take that extra step forward.
Forward with Purpose and Perseverance
In the wake of the past year’s storms, we’re starting this season fresh, but not empty. The experiences of 2023 and 2024 have given us valuable lessons in resilience, and now, we’re ready to channel that energy into growth. As we prepare to roll out new MSR and Medley tunes, we do so with a renewed sense of purpose.
So, how do we continue to get better? We keep striving, we keep supporting, and we stay connected to our mission and each other. Through these commitments, the future of Wake and District remains bright and strong, ready for whatever lies ahead.
