In the world of music, and especially in a pipe band, clarity is key. Every note played, every beat struck, must resonate with precision and purpose. This pursuit of clarity is not limited to music—it extends to how we communicate, lead, and connect as members of a team.
We recently came across a powerful quote: “To be unclear is to be unkind.” These words struck a chord with us because they echo the importance of transparency and understanding within our band. When we fail to communicate clearly—whether about expectations, goals, or even simple logistics—we leave room for uncertainty, frustration, and division. Clarity, on the other hand, fosters trust, respect, and unity.
As Wake and District moves forward, we are focusing on being clear in everything we do. From the way we set our musical goals to how we share our vision for the future, we aim to ensure that every band member knows where we are headed and how they fit into the journey. Our leadership changes for the 2025 season reflect this commitment to clarity.
With Pipe Major Adrian Melvin and Drum Sergeant Jacob Egen leading our overall musical direction, Pipe Major Ken McKeveny and Lead Tip Neil Seivwright leading Grade 3, and Pipe Major Paul Landers and Lead Tip Fisher Reese leading Grade 4, the path forward is well-lit. The music we play, the competitions we enter, and the values we uphold will all be guided by open communication and shared understanding.
But clarity isn’t just a leadership responsibility—it’s a collective effort. It’s in the way we show up to practices prepared, listen to each other’s feedback, and support one another through challenges. It’s about being kind enough to communicate openly, even when conversations are difficult, because we know that avoiding tough topics only breeds confusion.
As we reflect on the storms we’ve weathered together in recent years, it’s clear that our success as a band comes not just from playing well, but from staying connected and aligned. We are proud to be a group that values kindness, respect, and accountability. By embracing clarity in all aspects of our work, we honor these values and strengthen the ties that bind us.
Let’s move forward with a shared commitment: to be clear in our intentions, our communication, and our music. Because to be unclear is to be unkind—and Wake and District is a band rooted in harmony, on and off the stage.
Here’s to a future defined by clarity, kindness, and the music we love to make together.
